The Green Mill in Chicago. Whenever my East Coast or West Coast friends come to visit Chicago (not often) I take them to The Green Mill, and they are knocked out.  The music and atmosphere is totally unique, it's way off the radar of tourist traps, and it's full of history.

I have enjoyed travelling to the Philippines a few times, beautiful place, awesome food, rich culture, lots to do and the dollar can go a long way.  I have written a few hubs about it and hope to write more in the future on this fun and interesting place.

Although I cannot claim to be a seasoned travel expert, as a matter of fact I have only travelled through 25 countries in 50 years. However, one place (it is actually a city) stands out above and beyond for me. That would be Paris, France. The "City of Lights," the once small Celtic fishing village is so romantic and entertaining to me. There is so much to see and participate in and their food is simply magnificent...

Depending on what type of vacation you want, Tibet is a beautiful country with wonderful people and scenery.  A popular route is to start in Lhasa (to get acclimated to the elevation) and hire a private car and driver to Mount Everest and into Nepal.  The natural scenery and temples they have are just breathtaking.

I highly recommend Fridays Harbor in the San Juan islands, Washington!  The ride over to the Harbor on the ferry from Anacortes,Washington is breathtaking.  Take Interstate 5 north 65 miles from Seattle to Exit 230 at Burlington, and follow state Route 20 west to the ferry terminal in Anacortes. You can walk on or drive your car. When you arrive at Fridays Harbor you can walk around the little tourist town, shop, eat or sit in a restaurant and share a quiet time toasting the area with a glass of champaign (or an ale).  Of course, if you like you may find a room at a hotel or bed & breakfast and spend a few days.  http://www.fridayharbor.com/travel.cfm

If you like traveling to major cities to see how the masses are living, one of the most interesting cities I have been to is Montreal, Canada. I was really impressed with Toronto Canada, but, the mix of cultures in Montreal, and the over-all atmosphere of the city really amazed me. It's also very clean and modern, mixed in with the old.

It's another city that is not far from the border with the United States, but, when you are there it feels like you have crossed the ocean to Europe. Most everyone speaks french, and a lot of the city signs are also in french. There is a lot to do and see in Montreal, and for amusement park lovers like me, there is a Six Flags theme park right across the bridge from downtown called La Ronde.

One of the things we did, was going up to Mount Royale. It's very pretty up there, with all kinds of flowering gardens, and has an amazing view over looking the city. It of course has the big shopping scene. And, you can actually walk around in the downtown area without fearing for your life, as in some American cities.

I have not been to Montreal in a while, but, if I had the money, it would be on my travel to do list. That and Las Vegas. Just because I haven't been there.

South Africa: beautiful people, great weather, awesome!  I visited in February, and saw Capetown, Johannesburg, Thornybush (safaris), Robben's Island, Zambia, Victoria Falls, and Zimbabwe.  The most amazing experience ever.  Visiting Robben's Island was intense because we met a man who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela, and the fact that he had no hard feelings for being put there during Apartheid was amazing.  Also, the villages in Zambia made me see true poverty, not what you see on t.v. and it makes you appreciate your blessings.

And Thornybush was out of this world.  Going on safari every night and every morning was breathtaking.  To sit in an open jeep and have the animals right there at an arm's reach: lions, hippos, elephants, rhinos, monkeys, buffalo, giraffes, zebras; I could go on and on.  It's better than any circus you'll ever visit.
