   What advice can you give on first aid? (Weekly Topic Inspiration)
   
   Have you ever had to provide first aid to someone? Have you taken a first aid training course before? What sorts of tips could you offer to people that might help them do the right thing when they need to care for someone who is sick or injured?    Yes, I have given first aid many, many times. I am a registered nurse, previously certified in critical care and have worked in the emergency department and as a licensed paramedic as well. I taught CPR and first aid for about 20 years and have also taught advanced cardiac life support. I have taught nursing as well as emergency medical technology in level I trauma centers.
   
   I can offer the following tips:
   1. Call for help early
   2. Know when it is safe to move an accident victim and when it is not
   3. Make sure the scene is safe for anyone providing first aid, including yourself
   4. Keep the victim warm and calm
   5. Be creative - I once ran short on splints when picking up a trauma victim as a flight nurse in Mexico and used the Wall Street Journal I found laying around as a splint
   6. Carry identification on your own body in case of emergency or accident
   7. If you use a service dog, carry emergency instructions for care and handling of your dog in your dog's vest/cape
   8. Do not give anything to drink or eat to a trauma victim - they may need to go to surgery
   9. Do not attempt to provide any care beyond your expertise
   10. Take a CPR course to know how to properly perform CPR and then if the occasion arises, perform to the best of your ability as instructed and do not worry about a lawsuit

   What an appropriate topic inspiration!  I am re-certifying my Wilderness First Aid (again) this weekend.  I just finished my re-cert for CPR for the Professional Rescuer. 
   
   Though part of first aid is instinctual, you can never have too much training and I'm always surprised how much I forget .  Also, each new instructor and each new handbook offers new insights to patient care. 
   
   As a SAR team member, we practice first aid improvisation in the field.  There is only so much medical equipment we can carry.  You never know when you have to make a traction splint with a trekking pole or use garbage bags to make a hypothermia wrap. 
   
   Over the years, I've been thankful for my first-aid training, having used it on others and myself.

   Just adding some dialogue . . .Both Dubuquedogtrainer and Outbounddan have added so much to this day today. Just reading there feedback here intrigues me. DdT (I mixed the letters, so not to be misleading offers an introduction to a class or training session in 10 easy steps leading to responsibility, especially number #9.
   
   And Dan reminds me of 'MacGyver' with his post. What comes to mind, while not knowing our education system intimately today for secondary school curriculum I wonder why First Aid is not a requirement. Seems pretty important.
   
   Teaching first aid does, in my view, more than demonstrate whats and hows to emergency situations. It also teaches an attitude of responsibility to community and the old Boy Scout motto of "Be Prepared." I think it was Paul 'Bear' Bryant of football fame at Texas A&M and Alabama that said 'Luck is Preparation Meeting Opportunity." Or, that person laying on the ground may be lucky if we are prepared . . .

    The first thing to remember when it comes to first aid is action. I can't tell you how many times an accidents have occurred and people just stand and watch. I can remember a motor cycle wreck that happened a block away from me where a man had stopped breathing from the fall and a crowed of people just stood and watched; lucky for him a doctor was in the crowed and could save his life. When an accident occurs and you can save that persons life take action, don't over think the issue or hope someone else will come to their rescue.

    I have had first aid training so it was interesting to go through the necessary steps again.  We live in Africa so although we don't have much snow except in the mountains, we do have everything else in abundance! 
    
    Wilderness first aid requires a lot of forethought before you set out. Your first aid kit needs to be extensive as it may be more than First aid, it is probably the only medical aid available until you are out of the wilderness!
