I just have a few broad stroke suggestions.

I try to buy produce at local farmers markets instead of a the large grocery chains.

The produce is a better quality and not so much fuel is used in shipping from distant parts of the globe.

It is also a good idea to learn some basic cooking skills; and, avoid a large amount of the factory processed dinners and ingredients.  Most of the processed food is not good for you and is using up a lot of energy resources to make.

Obviously during the winter months, buying local becomes more challenging. However, more and more locals are growing hydroponic vegetables and although a little more expansive the carbon footprint is a lot less than produce shipped across country. Also, from April to October I grow my own artisan lettuce and when my other vegetables aren't ripe for picking I usually buy them at farm stands or farmer's markets.

Opting for fruits and vegetables and food with little packaging is definitely an eco-friendly choice. It is also wise to bring your own reusable bags instead of using the plastic ones they offer in the supermarket. Making local choices is always better than buying food that had to be shipped from far away countries. Generally healthy food is more environmentally friendly than processed food as processing requires a lot of packaging to keep the food edible.

Our local green market offers local produce.  But our supermarket has bins to bring your plastic recycling (which we use since we live out in the country and are not on city trash service).

I would also suggest buying in containers that have the lowest ratio of packaging to product.  Bulk isn't always the answer, but it can be, especially if you know how to store the immediate excess.

I still have plastic shopping bags at home, but we use them over and over again until we recycle them as part of our curbside services.  When I first retired, I joined a crochet group.  One of the women was showing us how to crochet shopping bags (using plastic shopping bags), but I wasn't paying attention at the time.  I don't have enough skills to crochet a simple shopping bag, but I can incorporate plastic shopping bags into my crafts.  By doing this, I'm more aware of how we frequently waste these plastic shopping bags.  I've finally cut loose with some of my tote bags (I love to collect them) and keep them in my truck for all of my shopping adventures.

I feel the very important way to make eco-friendly choice is to start using the organic food items. I use to get all my organic food items from the local farmer's market every week. When I use to visit supermarket, I will check what is the latest organic addition and try that. It is always good to remember to take recyclable bag every time when we go out.

Eco-friendliness should start right from every home. Not only the food items. There are several ways, if we explore properly, we can do organic shopping at supermarkets and be a part of helping the eco-system of  Mother Earth.

Thank You Simone for choosing this great topic for this week's 'Weekly Topic Inspiration'.
